The Best Beauty Moments at the 2013 Met Gala

Punk, with its undercurrents of rebellion and reinvention, brought out the best of the fashion flock at last night’s Met Gala—where more than a few beauty transformations made their winning debut. Actress Anne Hathaway turned up on the red carpet with an extreme bleach-blonde crop that sent photographers into overdrive, while model Joan Smalls showed off a cool new ombré hair color that graduated sharply from brown to blonde.
Cara Delevingne offered up a study in several of the night’s biggest trends—smoky, sooty black eye makeup and hair that was scraped back dramatically on one side, creating the impression of a razored punk fade. Also spotted: studded crowns and jeweled headpieces woven into spiky twists, and slick high knots worn with fearlessly bright lips.
Of course, some guests didn’t need to stray far from their signature style in order to make a statement: Met Gala cochair Rooney Mara returned to the darkly romantic look (raven hair, oxblood lips) that has made her an international fashion star; Gwen Stefani paired her everyday beauty staples (platinum hair, vermilion pout)  with an equally graphic Maison Martin Margiela dress.
Perhaps it was Stella Tennant, the British supermodel with aristocratic origins and enduring punk attitude, who best captured the night’s bold spirit. She combed her hair into a sleek, sculptural crop—wearing it with a graphic rimming of eyeliner, glittering oversize earrings, and slouchy Christopher Kane pants that rewrote the rule book on new evening style. Rebel yell, indeed.
